Should I get a beret? What type?

I've always thought berets were really cool, and now I think I might get one. I have pale skin and long, fine brown hair. What material is the best for berets? Most of the ones I've seen are wool or knitted/crocheted. At first I thought I wanted a clical-looking one, that would be more wool and structured, but the crocheted ones look more comfortable and versatile. I was thinking about getting a black beret. Is that a good color? What seasons are berets appropriate to wear in? What kind of images do people have of girls who wear berets?
