Did Langston Hughes influence music or was he influenced BY music?

I don't see why the two have to be mutually exclusive. It's quite apparent that he was influenced by music—his syntax echoes jazz on a fundamental level. But it's also true that he was a key figure in the Harlem Renaissance, and in the broader culture of his era, and someone in that position would be hard-pressed NOT to influence fellow artists in different media.
